About This Archive

Gurbani Updesh has shared Katha, Kirtan and related recordings freely since 2008. The site carries no advertising, sells nothing, and accepts no payment of any kind. It is run as sewa, out of pocket, so that sangat anywhere in the world can listen.

In short: the Bani itself belongs to everyone. Individual recordings may belong to the person or jatha who made them. If a recording here is yours and you would like it removed, credited differently, or replaced with a link to your own site, write to us and we will act within 48 hours — no explanation needed, no questions asked.

Gurbani Belongs to Everyone

The Bani of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is not owned by anyone. It was given for all of humanity and no person, institution or company holds rights over the shabads themselves. We believe it should always be free to hear, read, recite and share.

A recording is a different matter. When a ragi jatha or kathavachak performs, and someone records that performance, rights can exist in the recording itself — held by the performer, by whoever made the recording, or by a label if the recording was commercially released.

We respect both truths. The Bani is free. The sewa of the person who sang it, spoke it or recorded it deserves their consent and their name.

If a Recording Here Is Yours

Much of what is on this site was recorded at diwans and samagams, or passed to us by sangat over many years. In some cases we simply do not know who made the original recording. If you do, please tell us.

You can ask us to do any of the following, and we will:

• Remove it. We take the file down. You do not need to give a reason.
• Correct the credit. Wrong ragi name, wrong jatha, wrong samagam or date — tell us and we will fix it.
• Point to you instead. We will replace the file with a link to your own website, YouTube channel or wherever you would prefer people listen.
• Leave it, with your blessing. If you are happy for it to stay, we would be glad to add your name and a link.

Our commitment: we act on every request within 48 hours of reading it. We will not argue, ask you to prove anything, or make you send a formal notice first. A simple message is enough.

To help us find the right file quickly, please include:

• The page address or the title of the recording as it appears on our site
• Your name, and your connection to the recording (performer, family, recordist, or rights holder)
• What you would like us to do

If a recording is yours and we have not credited you, that is our mistake and we are sorry for it. Please write to us.

Help Us Get the Credits Right

We want every recording on this site to carry the name of the ragi or kathavachak, the samagam or Gurdwara, and the date — wherever we can establish them. Many older recordings reached us with none of this.

If you recognise a voice, know where or when a recording was made, or can correct something we have listed wrongly, please write to us. Corrections from sangat are welcome and we are grateful for them.

If You Send Us a Recording

Sangat often share recordings with us, and we are thankful for it. When you send us a recording, you are confirming that:

• You recorded it yourself, or you have permission from whoever did
• It is not a commercially released album that is still being sold
• You are happy for it to be offered here as a free download

Please tell us the ragi or kathavachak's name and where the recording was made, if you know. We do not host commercially released albums. If you believe something on this site is one, please let us know and we will remove it.
